Shift work is a common practice in healthcare settings, ensuring continuous patient care. However, irregular working hours, night shifts, and extended duty periods can have adverse effects on the mental health of psychiatric nurses. Research indicates that shift work disrupts circadian rhythms, leading to sleep disturbances, stress, anxiety, and burnout among healthcare workers (Adegbite et al., 2023).
In psychiatric hospitals, nurses face additional challenges due to the nature of their work, which involves managing mentally unstable patients, handling aggressive behavior, and providing emotional support. These factors increase their susceptibility to mental health issues, particularly when combined with shift-related fatigue (Okoro & James, 2024). The Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, Ogun State, is a leading mental health facility in Nigeria where psychiatric nurses work in shifts to ensure continuous care for patients. However, little research has been conducted to assess how shift work impacts their mental health and overall job performance.
Understanding the effects of shift work on psychiatric nurses is crucial for improving workplace policies, enhancing nurse well-being, and ultimately ensuring better patient care. This study will examine the psychological effects of shift work on psychiatric nurses and suggest strategies for mitigating negative outcomes.
Psychiatric nurses in Nigeria face significant mental health challenges due to demanding work conditions, staff shortages, and inadequate support systems. Shift work further exacerbates these challenges by disrupting sleep patterns, increasing stress levels, and reducing overall job satisfaction (Bashir et al., 2024).
While research has been conducted on the general impact of shift work on healthcare workers, there is limited data focusing on psychiatric nurses in Nigeria. Given the emotionally demanding nature of psychiatric care, understanding how shift work affects the mental well-being of psychiatric nurses at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, is critical. Without proper intervention, prolonged exposure to shift work stress may lead to high turnover rates, reduced efficiency, and poor patient outcomes.
This study focuses on psychiatric nurses at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, Ogun State, examining the effects of shift work on their mental health. Limitations include potential differences in individual coping abilities and variations in work schedules.
